Author: Fr. John Sheets, SJ

Article Abstract:

In this article, the late author, Jesuit Priest and Auxiliary Bishop, attempts to give a global description of the Christian meaning of freedom. Does the Christian notion of freedom differ from the merely “human” notion of freedom? The author successfully leads the reader through a study of the various aspects of freedom: the biblical notion, the New Testament notion of freedom in Christ and the freedom of the Christian living in the world today. Although the human being is an image of God, “imago Dei”, what does that mean for ordinary Christian living? Sheets, answers that question by describing some of the implications of the Christian notion of freedom in relation to our contemporary culture.
