At the point where Congressional approval of the Yucca Mountain repository site for Nuclear Waste was essentially assured of passage, the New York Times trumped up a story based on a previously-discredited report. The science writers for the Times KNEW the facts relating to the issue, knew of the scientific studies that had refuted it, but published the story anyway, giving it a very distorted slant – front page, on a Sunday edition. This gave the Congressional opponents new ammunition for their fight against Yucca Mountain.
